Even during Summer, you'll find snow-covered glaciers on the Svalbard islands, which are located far up in the North between Norway and the North Pole. Discover the beautiful views around Longyearbyen, experience untouched wilderness and wildlife during this incredible snowmobile and hiking activity!
This tour is a great combination of snowmobiling and hiking.
After a short briefing by your guide, it's time to drive up north to Nybyen where you will start to hike up to the Longyear glacier. The terrain is quite rocky but the hike itself is not that difficult. At some point, you will need to cross a small river so be prepared! Once you arrive at the glacier, your guide will tell you everything you need to know about driving the snowmobile.
From here, you will drive up the glacier for about 4 km until we reach the vantage point which is situated 600 meters above sea level. Enjoy a stunning view all over Longyearbyen and the valley Fardalen from here!
Even in Summer, Fardalen will be surrounded by snow-covered mountains and it is well-known as a popular spot for the local snowmobile enthusiasts. Here you will rest for a while and have a light lunch and refreshing drinks.
The drive back from the glacier will take roughly 30 minutes. You will continue by foot afterwards and you are going to walk through ancient moraine terrain! Between Mid-June and October, when there is no snow at this altitude, you might be able to find some fossils on the ground.
However, temperatures are just slightly above freezing points, so be advised to wear warm and waterproof clothing for this trip. In case you don't have any mountain boots, you can rent snowmobile boots from the guide.
All snowmobile drivers must bring a valid driver's licence and you need to be at least 18-years old. If you don't have a valid licence, you will not be able to drive the snowmobile. In Norway, there is a zero tolerance for the influence of alcohol when driving a snowmobile.
You can choose to purchase an optional snowmobile insurance policy for NOK 200 from the guide of this activity. In case of an accident with your snowmobile, you will not have to pay a fee to cover the damages (the snowmobiles are insured up to NOK 6000). If you wish to share a snowmobile as a driver and passenger, then you only need the insurance for one person. The minimum required age for passengers is 12.
This guide has 6 snowmobiles available. In case you are booking as a group, please be aware that there can be only 6 drivers. Each snowmobile can fit the driver and passenger. Driver and passenger can switch though during the activity.
The only locations the instructor can pick up in Longyearbyen is as follows:
